Ben Shelton’s injury woes have seen him withdraw from an important tournament during the Asian hard-court swing.
The American’s dreams of winning the US Open were left in tatters after he suffered a shoulder injury during his third-round match against Adrian Mannarino, forcing him to retire.
Shelton could decide to make an even more significant decision in the future, but for now, he has decided to withdraw from just one ATP Tour event.
The young star had been enjoying the best form of his career, having recently won his first Masters 1000 title at the Canadian Open. Therefore, it is unfortunate to see his progress hampered during such a positive period.
Shelton’s withdrawal is particularly pertinent considering the tournament’s status as an ATP 500 event.
Former champion Ben Shelton withdraws from the Tokyo Open

On Thursday, American superstar Ben Shelton withdrew from the upcoming Tokyo Open in Japan, which is set to take place from September 24 to 30.
The American, who won the title in 2023, reached the quarter-finals of the event in 2024, meaning he will lose 100 ATP points following his withdrawal.
Shelton’s decision demonstrates his remarkable maturity, despite his young age.
The 22-year-old cannot afford to take any significant risks with his body at such an early stage in his career, and this withdrawal will aid his recovery and serve him well in the long run.
When Shelton will return to the ATP Tour remains a mystery. However, he must not rush this process of recovery.
Alongside Shelton, Benjamin Bonzi has also withdrawn, allowing both Fabian Marozsan and Marcos Giron to enter the Tokyo Open main draw.
What did Ben Shelton say about his injury?
Following his withdrawal from the US Open, Shelton revealed he had ‘never felt anything like this before’ with regard to his shoulder injury.
Shelton told reporters: “Usually I’ll play through anything and just find a way.

“And whether it’s sickness or injury, if I can stay out there, I can stay out there. I’ve never felt anything like this before, so that was kind of tough, I guess the uncertainty.”
Shelton is simply a joy to watch on the ATP Tour, bringing the passion and spirit few can provide. His return to the Tour will be much anticipated, whenever that may be.
