Former world number 10 Clement has had a dismal year and the 31-year-old has slumped out of the top 100 – but he was more than a match for Beck and won 6-4 6-2.

Beck’s compatriot Michael Berrer fared better, ousting Finland’s Henri Kontinen 7-5 7-6 (9/7) in a battle of two qualifiers.

Brazilian Thomaz Bellucci knocked out Denmark’s Frederik Nielsen, winning 7-6 (8/6) 6-3, while Sweden’s Andreas Vinciguerra failed to provide a crowd-pleasing win as he lost 6-3 6-2 to Belgium’s Olivier Rochus.

American Robert Kendrick eliminated Spain’s Oscar Hernandez, prevailing 6-3 6-4.
