The Frenchwoman lost the first set but responded well to triumph 5-7 6-3 6-1.

Second seed Victoria Azarenka of Belarus did not have it all her own way either as she battled to a 7-6 (7/4) 7-5 victory over Slovakia-born Jarmila Gajdosova, who now lives and trains in Melbourne.

Italian Tathiana Garbin advanced with a 4-6 6-4 6-2 win against Russia’s Alisa Kleybanova.
