It is the first time in the 17-year history of the event that three of the top four seeds have reached this stage of the tournament.

All four of the players were also trying to reach their first ATP World Tour 500 tournament in 2009.

The first semi final saw top seed Serb Novak Djokovic take on Gilles Simon (third seed), Novak edged past the persistent Frenchman 3-6, 7-5, 7-5 in searing temperatures to take his season match record to 12-4.

The evening semi was a much quicker affair as fourth seed Spaniard David Ferrer took charge over unseeded Richard Gasquet. Ferrer, who has been struggling to find form of late, seemed sharp and energetic mauling the former world No.7 6-2, 6-2.

Saturday’s final between the Serb and the Spaniard will definitely wet the appetite for next week’s Davis Cup tie when Serbia take on Spain in the World Group first round.
