Former world number eight Baghdatis needed almost three hours to edge past Taiwan’s Yen-Hsun Lu 4-6 6-3 7-6.

Dent also had to come from a set down to beat Andrey Golubev of Kazakhstan 4-6 6-3 7-6.

The victory sets up a second-round clash with top seed Nikolay Davydenko in what will be their first meeting since the 2003 US Open, where Dent won in straight sets.

American Brendan Evans beat compatriot and fellow qualifier Michael Yani 6-3 6-4 and will face third seed Robin Soderling in the second round.
