The problem with her right ankle forced her to withdraw from her BNP Paribas Open quarter-final clash Caroline Wozniacki last week. Her early exit from Indian Wells, where she was defending champion, saw her saw her drop to No.3 in the WTA rankings after being overtaken by Sharapova following the Russian's victory in California.

She had been hopeful of shaking off the injury in time to play at Key Biscayne, but pulled out less than an hour before her scheduled opening match against home favourite Madison Keys. Azarenka will be replaced in the draw by Lauren Davis.

"It's not pleasant, but I have to think positively in this particular time. It's not life-threatening, it's just an unknown situation," Azarenka said earlier this week of her injury. "It's frustrating, but it's sport. You have to deal with it. There is no other way. You just deal with it and make the best of what's happening."
