The season’s curtain raiser Down Under throws up plenty of shocks and drama each year and 2013 promises to be no different. Single session tickets for the Australian Open, which kicks off January 14 and runs through to the men’s final on January 27, are now available for purchase through Ticketek (see below). Tickets on offer are for the two main stadiums – Rod Laver Arena and Hisense Arena – while a ground pass (AUD$34) will give fans access to the park and the action on the outdoor courts.

At next year’s event the players will be vying for the game’s biggest ever prize purse. The AUD$30 million kitty is a AUD$4 million hike on last year, the biggest single increase in the history of the event.

“We are proud to announce this major increase in prize money,” said Tennis Australia CEO Steve Wood. “We have led the world in prize money for these incredible athletes and we want to ensure that the Australian Open continues to make a major contribution to the financial wellbeing of professional tennis players.” Wood also added that they would continue to liaise with player groups regarding the fair distribution of the prize pot between competitors.

Work has also begun on the first stage of the AUD$363 million redevelopment of Melbourne Park, the home of the Australian Open, and is set for completion in 2015.
