The mutual respect on display between Aryna Sabalenka and Naomi Osaka last night was evident.

After all, before, during and after the match, the two were clearly in awe of one another, and this reverence translated into both of their press conferences as well.

Whilst the current world number one asserted her dominance over the Japanese superstar, she still understands how it was Naomi Osaka once in her position.

She is also acutely aware that, if she maintains her current trajectory, the only way is up for her as well.

Aryna Sabalenka basically said as much, as she branded her opponent an inspiration in her post-match press conference.Β

She began by explaining why, despite having been tested against this ever-improving champion, she is happy to see Osaka back nearing her best.

Sabalenka stated: β€œI feel like this year I am just getting to know her. She is definitely a fighter and a great player. I am super happy to see her kind of back. Maybe not at her best tennis, but getting there.

β€œAfter giving birth, that is something unbelievable and inspiring. I am just happy to see her back and play matches against her. It is always a battle and always challenging, so I am just enjoying them.”

She then explained how her wealth of experience helps her to continue carving through the draw with minimal fuss, adding: β€œI just remember when I won my first Grand Slam all I was telling myself was if I am able to bring my fight and do my best with what I have at the moment I will have my opportunities.

β€œThat was basically my mindset when I won the first Grand Slam. At this stage I am just trying to focus on myself, and when I am there I am fighting and competing and doing everything I can with what I have at the moment.

β€œSometimes you have great days, and sometimes you feel like nothing is working and you have to fight.

β€œThat is my mindset, basically that I am ready to do whatever it takes to get this beautiful trophy.”

Sabalenka also made a comment about finally playing the night session at Roland Garros too, straight after her win over Osaka.

Aryna Sabalenka’s route to the Roland Garros title

With Osaka having been beaten, Sabalenka’s potential road to the title has eased significantly.

In fact, it really feels like this tournament is hers to lose, given the lack of elite-level opposition that remains in the draw.

How many Grand Slams will Aryna Sabalenka win this year?

She looks unstoppable right now!

Next up for the 28-year-old is Diana Shnaider, and should she beat her compatriot, then it’s expected to be Anna Kalinskaya awaiting her in the semi-finals. Neither is expected to give her huge trouble.

And then, one of Elina Svitolina or Marta Kostyuk seems like the favourite to reach the final from the other half of the draw.

Sabalenka has lost just one match to either of these two Ukrainian stars in a combined 12 meetings against them.
