Arthur Fils sparked concern when he retired midway through his Italian Open second-round match against home favourite Andrea Pellegrino.

Fils, who missed the majority of the 2025 ATP campaign due to a persistent back injury, told reporters that he had felt pain in his hip during the contest.

The Frenchman went on to state that he couldn’t ‘take any risks before Roland Garros.’

“No need to take any risks at this stage of the season. Already back to work and fully focused on Paris.

“Thanks for all the messages and support.”

This update will come as a relief to the Frenchman, who has been much maligned by injury over the past 18 months.

Fils suffered a stress fracture in his back during the 2025 clay-court swing, forcing him to miss almost the entirety of the 2025 season.

The 21-year-old has been in inspired form since making his return in February, reaching at least the quarter-finals in seven of the nine events he has participated in.

In April, Fils secured the biggest title of his career to date, winning the Barcelona Open.

Arthur Fils’ projected French Open seeding

Arthur Fils is currently projected to be the world number 17 following the conclusion of the Italian Open.

As a result, when the French Open draw is made later this month, Fils will likely play a top 16 seed in the third round.

Last year, Fils was seeded 14th at Roland Garros, meaning he was projected to play a player ranked between 17 and 32 in the third round.

Fils did reach the third round of last year’s event and was due to play 17th seed Andrey Rublev.

However, Fils withdrew shortly before the match due to injury.

Consequently, Fils is defending 100 ATP ranking points at this year’s French Open event.
