Arthur Fils is the latest superstar to react to the news that Carlos Alcaraz will not be participating at this year’s Roland Garros.

He, like most of the tennis world, was emotional to hear of this news.

After all, it has seen the tournament’s greatest entertainer and heavy favourite ruled out of contention.

Arthur Fils would be forgiven for providing a bittersweet reaction to this update, given the opportunity it presents.

However, he had nothing but kind words to say for his fellow youngster.

Speaking after being updated on Carlos Alcaraz’s injury, he simply admitted: “It’s bad news.”

Fils expanded on why the Spaniard will be such a big miss, adding: “He’s fantastic, a great friend. I wasn’t aware. It’s very sad.

“I think we’re all going to miss the absence of a great champion, and he is one of the best players in tennis history.”

Few would debate his concluding statement, with fans in particular set to suffer from his absence.

Fils is not the only star to react to this earth-shattering update, with Jannik Sinner having spoken about Alcaraz’s withdrawal too.

Arthur Fils could take advantage of Carlos Alcaraz’s injury at the French Open

Whilst it’s never nice for players or fans to see the sport’s biggest stars struck down with injury, there will be an air of cautious excitement from the former.

After all, the opportunity that has presented itself to the rest of the field is massive, with only Sinner left to uphold his end of their two-man dominance of the Grand Slams.

Can anyone now stop Jannik Sinner from winning Roland Garros after Carlos Alcaraz’s withdrawal?

If yes, who?

This means that, if the Italian slips up at any stage, we could have a brand-new champion at Roland Garros. Fils has every reason to believe that it could be him.

After all, the Frenchman will be well supported by his home crowd and has already proven his ability to thrive on this surface by winning the Barcelona Open title earlier this month.

It will still take a monumental task to topple Sinner, but with just one man between the rest of the field and the French Open title, the cause for optimism has skyrocketed in the wake of such disappointing news.
