Is Marta Kostyuk a dark horse to win the French Open?
She's just won the Madrid Open!
Many were surprised by Kostyuk’s Madrid Open win, but Andy Roddick thinks fans are getting confused about what she achieved in the Spanish capital.
Andy Roddick doesn’t think Marta Kostyuk’s Madrid Open win came ‘out of nowhere’
During the latest episode of ‘Served with Andy Roddick‘, the 2003 US Open champion delivered his verdict on Marta Kostyuk’s win in Madrid.
“[Marta] Kostyuk has always played a big game and has always been a threat,” he said.
“I remember her playing [Aryna] Sabalenka in Madrid last year and in Rome.
- 2026 Madrid Open QF – Aryna Sabalenka defeated Marta Kostyuk, 7-6, 7-6
- 2026 Italian Open 4R – Aryna Sabalenka defeated Marta Kostyuk, 6-1, 7-6
“Sabalenka won both because that’s what Sabalenka does, but she was able to stay more toe-to-toe with her, just general strength of shot.
“Last year, I took her deep at Roland Garros. Goes out and loses in the first round to a qualifier, wins like four games, you’re going, okay, that’s the inconsistency.
- 2025 French Open 1R – Sara Bejlek defeated Marta Kostyuk, 6-3, 6-1
“We haven’t seen that much this year.
“I know we’re going to say Kostyuk comes out of nowhere and wins Madrid.
“That’s not the story, that’s not what actually happened.
“She’s 12-0 on clay this year, including a Billie Jean King Cup tie.
“Hasn’t lost on clay.”

- Open de Rouen QF [WIN] vs Ann Li, 6-0, 6-7, 6-3
- Open de Rouen SF [WIN] vs Tatjana Maria, 6-3, 6-0
- Open de Rouen F [WIN] vs Veronika Podrez, 6-3, 6-4
- Madrid Open 2R [WIN] vs Yulia Putintseva, 6-1, 6-3
- Madrid Open 3R [WIN] vs Jessica Pegula, 6-1, 6-4
- Madrid Open 4R [WIN] vs Caty McNally, 6-2, 6-3
- Madrid Open QF [WIN] vs Linda Noskova, 7-6, 6-0
- Madrid Open SF [WIN] vs Anastasia Potapova, 6-2, 1-6, 6-1
- Madrid Open F [WIN] vs Mirra Andreeva, 6-3, 7-5
Roddick continued, predicting where Kostyuk could reach in the world rankings.
“It’s hard to say someone is a contender when they haven’t contended, but as far as form… To deliver under those circumstances [in Madrid] when there is expectation, is a massive departure from the expectation and how she dealt with it last year going into Roland Garros, or other times when she’s had form,” he said.
“12-0, 17-4 overall, and three of her four losses have come against Sabalenka or [Elena] Rybakina!
- Brisbane International F [LOSS] vs Aryna Sabalenka, 4-6, 3-6
- Australian Open 1R [LOSS] vs Elsa Jacquemot, 7-6, 6-7, 6-7
- Indian Wells 3R [LOSS] vs Elena Rybakina, 4-6, 4-6
- Miami Open 3R [LOSS] vs Elena Rybakina, 3-6, 4-6
“She can hurt you off both sides. The game is there; I think it’s just a matter of overcoming these stress tests.
“She did it in Madrid, which is different from what she’s done before. Can she deliver that at a major? Can she create what she’s created over the last three months for a year?

“If she does, she’s going to be five in the world.
“It’s a big if, there’s a lot of space in between where she is now and five in the world, [but] the game looks like it’s not an outlier result.”
Roddick believes Kostyuk has the potential to become a top-five player, but how close is she to that goal?
Marta Kostyuk is 3,629 points away from the top five
Kostyuk is ranked 15th in the world with 2,607 points.
Pegula is the world number five with 6,136 points.
Therefore, the Ukrainian is 3,629 points away from a spot in the top five.
She would need to win a Grand Slam, a WTA 1000, a WTA 500, and a WTA 250 to close that gap.
Looking at those numbers, Kostyuk has a long way to go, but the ‘Live WTA Race’ tells a different story.

For points earned this year, Kostyuk ranks ninth on the WTA Tour.
She’s still a long way back (745 points) from fifth-placed Elina Svitolina, although she will be confident of closing that gap, provided she continues to play as well as she has on clay this year.
Unfortunately for Kostyuk, she withdrew from the Italian Open due to injury, meaning she will lose ground to her rivals over the coming weeks.
Only time will tell if she can bounce back in style and maintain her unbeaten streak at the French Open.
The 2026 French Open begins on Sunday, May 24.
