Andy Roddick has not been shy about voicing his praise for Joao Fonseca over the last year or so.

And, having watched him now play Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz within a ten-day timespan, his positive opinion on the youngster seems to have only developed further.

Often using his podcast as a vessel to laud the Brazilian, Roddick has now actually travelled to Joao Fonseca’s homeland and spoken to more local outlets about the future of the sport in their country.

Speaking whilst in São Paulo for an exhibition match, the American pundit offered his latest verdict on Fonseca and what the future holds for this supremely talented teenage phenomenon.

Andy Roddick makes prediction about Joao Fonseca’s future

Unsurprisingly, much of Roddick’s opinion surrounds Fonseca’s recent matches against the world’s top two players.

Having narrowly lost to Sinner at Indian Wells, before performing admirably against Alcaraz in Miami this week, opinions on the 19-year-old have seemingly only become more positive despite recording two defeats.

Will Joao Fonseca be the man to break up Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner’s dominance?

If not, who will be?

Roddick argued that such matches, even if he loses, will only progress his development.

He claimed: “Every time Fonseca faces Sinner and Alcaraz, his growth curve will explode. What he does well is difficult to teach.

“What he needs to learn is easily teachable. I was impressed watching him at the US Open. We have to remember just how young he is.”

This comes just after Fonseca actually compared Alcaraz and Sinner, controversially stating who he felt had more weapons at their disposal.

What’s next for Joao Fonseca?

Having endured an unpredictable start to the 2026 season, suffering through injury early, it finally feels like his campaign is back on track.

This comes at a good time for him, just as the clay-court season is about to get underway.

Speaking just before his strong Roland Garros campaign last year, he insisted that this is a surface where he can have success during his career.

Joao Fonseca will be the man to unsettle Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner’s duopoly over men’s tennis – Prove us wrong!

Fonseca claimed: “I saw, because I was born on clay, but after the last year where I played a lot of hard, seven months of hard directly, I’m kind of more adapted to hard also.”

Rather worryingly, Fonseca claimed to have confused himself last year by switching between hard and clay during the first few months of the season; a decision he has decided to copy in 2026.

Hopefully, he can enter the clay-court swing with more clarity this year and start to establish himself as a player worthy of being discussed alongside Alcaraz and Sinner.
