Daniil Medvedev endured the worst defeat of his professional career at the Monte Carlo Masters, losing 6-0, 6-0, to Matteo Berrettini.

The former world number one won just 17 points in a truly humbling defeat.

During the match, Medvedev repeatedly smashed his racket, much to the amusement of the fans on Court Rainier III.

Will Daniil Medvedev ever win another title on clay?

Tennis legend Andy Roddick has now delivered his verdict on Medvedev’s conduct.

Andy Roddick admits it would be ‘really hard’ for him to get over a 6-0, 6-0 defeat

During the latest episode of ‘Served with Andy Roddick‘, the American had this to say about Medvedev’s meltdown in Monte Carlo.

“Meddy loses 6-0, 6-0, that’s a rough one,” said Roddick.

“Of course it’s the first [double] bagel of his career!

“The guy has been number one in the world. You don’t lose 6-0, 6-0 if you’re a good 14 and under player, 6-0, 6-0!”

Roddick then shared what he would rather do than lose a match 6-0, 6-0.

“I’m just telling you, I don’t think I would have done it, but 100% it would have crossed my mind. [At] 6-0, 3-0, I’m just thinking, can I convincingly turn my ankle and fall over?” he said.

“6-0, 6-0… I might let you take the tip of my pinky and cut it off before losing 6-0, 6-0; that would be really hard for me to get over.

“That would matter to me; that would hurt my ego so bad.

“Maybe that says a lot about my own insecurities, but 6-0, 6-0, man… You cannot explain, in 49 minutes, I don’t know. It’s unfathomable that someone as good as Medvedev loses 6-0, 6-0.”

He also took a moment to dispel the rumours that Medvedev isn’t good on clay.

“Everyone is like it’s not his best surface, the guy has won a Masters 1000 on clay!” said Roddick.

“I understand it’s not his best surface…. But if he had three names and he was from Spain, his career high ranking was 35, you would say he was a clay-court specialist, because he’s made the quarters of Roland Garros and he’s won a Masters 1000.

“It’s only because he’s so good elsewhere [that fans downplay his level on clay].

“6-0, 6-0 is so hard, it would be a rough one, the walk through the locker room is rough.”

Medvedev won’t be the favourite to win any clay-court titles this year, especially after the performance he delivered in the principality.

But there’s still plenty to be positive about if you’re a fan of the Russian.

Daniil Medvedev is on course to qualify for the ATP Finals

In 2025, Medvedev missed the year-end championships for the first time in seven years.

The Russian struggled throughout the year and only won one Grand Slam match.

Determined to bounce back, Medvedev replaced Gilles Cervara with Thomas Johansson and Rohan Goetzke.

Results immediately improved, and Medvedev won the Almaty Open at the end of the year.

Carrying that momentum forward to 2026, the 30-year-old has already won two titles and reached the final of Indian Wells.

Those performances have pushed him into fourth in the ‘Live ATP Race to Turin’.

If the season ended today, Medvedev would head to Turin alongside Jannik Sinner, Carlos Alcaraz, Alexander Zverev, Novak Djokovic, Alex de Minaur, Felix Auger-Aliassime, and Ben Shelton.

But the season doesn’t end today…

The reality is there is still plenty of tennis to be played between now and November.

And the worry for Medvedev is that he may slip down those rankings as the clay-court season progresses.

Looking to avoid a drop-off in form, Medvedev will attempt to bounce back from his Monte Carlo disappointment in Madrid.

The 2026 Madrid Open begins on Wednesday, April 22.
