Meanwhile, Pegula defeated 18-year-old compatriot Iva Jovic – booking her spot in the last eight for the first time since 2023.

Andy Roddick, the last American man to win a Grand Slam singles title, has stated who he believes has the edge heading into Tuesday’s blockbuster contest.

Andy Roddick believes Jessica Pegula will beat Coco Gauff at Wimbledon

“Coco played her best match by far,” Roddick, a three-time Wimbledon finalist, said on the Served Podcast.

“I thought she looked very average through her first three rounds. I am a big Coco fan but the old choppy [style] in the middle of the court was not going to work against Bencic.

Gauff defeated Tamara Korpatsch, Solana Sierra, and Claire Liu in her first three rounds at Wimbledon, losing two sets en route to the fourth round.

“She hit the ball better than she had and she volleyed like a wizard in the third set,” Roddick continued. “She was stab volleying off the shoe tops at big moments too.

“She took her forehand and instead of struggling and white knuckling it home, she would do this knock down shot down the line and coming in. I like that as an option for her moving forward.

Coco Gauff’s Wimbledon campaign so far

“I still like Jess in that match up,” the American star admitted. “Just because the head to head has been good and grass is good for Jess’s game.

“But credit to Coco because I thought Bencic was going to be a real problem on grass.”

It is easy to understand why Roddick has made this pick.

Despite her poor record at the event over the past few years, Pegula’s game is much more suited to grass courts than Gauff’s is.

Pegula has a low centre of gravity and strikes the ball very flat – an ideal play style for the fast, low-bouncing grass courts.

How do you rate Jessica Pegula’s chances of ever winning a Grand Slam?

Conversely, Gauff has historically played with a lot more topspin off her groundstrokes.

Of course, there is every chance that Gauff wins Tuesday’s contest. The 22-year-old has the quality to do so and has a positive head-to-head record against her compatriot.

Coco Gauff’s record vs Jessica Pegula

Gauff has won five of her eight prior matches against Jessica Pegula.

They last played each other at the 2025 WTA Finals, with Pegula emerging victorious by a scoreline of 6-3, 6-7, 6-2 in the round robin phase.

Pegula went on to reach the semi-finals, where she lost to eventual champion Elena Rybakina.

The pair have played each other twice before on grass courts.

Gauff won the first match, beating Pegula 6-3, 6-3 at the 2023 Eastbourne Open.

A year later, Pegula defeated Gauff 7-5, 7-6 at the 2024 Berlin Tennis Championships.

The occasion marked Pegula’s 20th top-10 win of her career.
