Joao Fonseca’s Brazilian fans were as loud as ever during his second-round defeat to Hamad Medjedovic at the Italian Open.
Growing frustrated, Medjedovic asked the umpire to tell Fonseca’s fans to ‘shut up’ during the latter stages of the match.
Afterwards, Fonseca admitted his fans bothered him during his defeat to Medjedovic.
Are Joao Fonseca’s fans good for tennis? 😬
Former world number one Andy Roddick has now delivered his verdict on Fonseca’s fans and their behaviour in Rome.
Andy Roddick says the atmosphere in Joao Fonseca’s last match looked ‘so much fun’
During the latest episode of ‘Served with Andy Roddick‘, the 43-year-old insisted he had no issue with Fonseca’s fans.
“[Joao] Fonseca loses to Hamad Medjedovic. But water is wet, the Brazilians were going nuts for Fonseca,” said Roddick.

“This is so much fun.
“I want to be in that, on either side of it, by the way.
“The thing is, that’s what you want to play in.
“Those types of atmospheres, put it in my veins, I’m either going to be the guy that shot Bambi, or everyone loves me, that’s a great situation to be in!”
Roddick did, however, suggest that Fonseca’s support could work against him.
“It’s not easy if you’re Fonseca, too,” he said.
“He can’t melt into being a top-10 player; it’s this craziness.

“We’re seeing it with Fonseca, we’re seeing it with [Alex] Eala, we’re seeing these silos of borderline obsession, before people are top-5 players.
“It’s not as if they are Grand Slam champions!
“[Jannik] Sinner, getting higher ratings than soccer in Italy, this is crazy, how much fun is this for tennis?”
Roddick rightly pointed out that Fonseca’s fan support doesn’t match his results on tour.

Fonseca hasn’t reached the fourth round of a Grand Slam or broken into the world’s top 20, yet he is one of the most popular players in men’s tennis.
He’ll undoubtedly be looking to make waves at the French Open later this month, but how well has he played leading up to the second Grand Slam of the year?
Joao Fonseca has lost three matches in a row on clay
Fonseca made an excellent start to his clay-court campaign, reaching the quarter-finals of the Monte Carlo Masters.
He then qualified for another quarter-final in Munich, securing wins over Alejandro Tabilo and Arthur Rinderknech.
Unfortunately, since defeating Rinderknech 28 days ago, Fonseca hasn’t won a match on clay.
Joao Fonseca’s 2026 European clay-court record (5-4)
- Monte Carlo Masters 1R [WIN] vs Gabriel Diallo, 6-2, 6-3

- Madrid Open 3R [LOSS] vs Rafael Jodar, 6-7, 6-4, 1-6
- Italian Open 2R [LOSS] vs Hamad Medjedovic, 6-3, 3-6, 6-7
Fonseca has lost to Ben Shelton, Rafael Jodar, and Hamad Medjedovic.
Heading into Roland Garros riding a three-match losing streak would be far from ideal, but luckily for Fonseca, he’s scheduled to play another event next week.
Fonseca will compete in Hamburg, an ATP 500 event.
Top eight seeds confirmed for the Hamburg Open
- 1. Alexander Zverev
- 2. Felix Auger-Aliassime
- 3. Ben Shelton
- 4. Lorenzo Musetti

The Brazilian will be desperate to return to winning ways before the French Open begins.
Only time will tell what the future holds for Fonseca on clay.
This year’s Hamburg Open starts on Monday, May 18.
