Andy Roddick admits he was wrong about Ben Shelton, Frances Tiafoe and Taylor Fritz after Wimbledon

American men failed to meet expectations at the 2026 Wimbledon Championships.

Ben Shelton, Frances Tiafoe, and Taylor Fritz arrived at the All England Club in good form, but the trio underperformed.

Former world number one and the last American men’s singles Grand Slam champion, Andy Roddick, has now shared his thoughts on their performances.

Andy Roddick was ‘pretty convinced’ an American man would play the Wimbledon final

During the latest episode of ‘Served with Andy Roddick‘, the American reflected on a poor tournament for his countrymen.

“This next one’s a bummer, no American men in the semis,” said Roddick.

“If you heard our draw show at the beginning of the tournament, I was pretty convinced that we were going to have one in the final.”

How American men performed at Wimbledon in 2026

Roddick commented on Shelton’s shock first-round defeat, where he lost to a player ranked outside the world’s top 100.

“Ben [Shelton] was playing great, lost to a qualifier, [Otto] Virtanen, 150 in the world,” he said.

“That one has to, you’re four, five in the world, you lose that match, you kind of have to take a look in the mirror, the pattern recognition I don’t think was there, some weird drop shots and decision-making.

“Ben has all upside, had never been out of the country before he went to Australia and made the quarters or semis or whatever it was. He’s not one of these guys who was playing junior tournaments from when he was 11-years-old. I do give some grace for that, but this has to be disappointing for him.”

He also spoke about Fritz and Tiafoe’s disappointing Wimbledon campaigns.

“Frances losing to [Alexander] Bublik when he had a million set points…” said Roddick.

“Taylor going down. I hope his knee is ok. I think that was part of the issue against [Alexander] Zverev, but there is no guarantee that he wins that match against Zverev anyway.

“I think I was full of excitement and rightfully so, because they played so well coming in. I said that it was the first time I looked at the draw and said it was likely, not possible, but likely that there’s an American man in the finals. Not exactly how it turned out.”

Shelton and Fritz were placed on the opposite half of the draw from the two title favourites, Jannik Sinner and Novak Djokovic, at Wimbledon.

Therefore, many believed they had a golden opportunity to qualify for the Wimbledon final.

But neither took advantage, as it was Germany’s Alexander Zverev who reached the final from that half of the draw.

Can the Americans bounce back at the US Open?

Fritz, Shelton, and Tiafoe will be keen to put their Wimbledon disappointments behind them and challenge for the US Open title later this year.

The issue is that one of the best players in the men’s game, Carlos Alcaraz, is expected to return in time for the fourth Grand Slam of the year.

At the French Open and Wimbledon, the rest of the ATP Tour only had to worry about one of Sinner and Alcaraz, but the Americans, in particular, couldn’t step up in the Spaniard’s absence.

With Alcaraz back, the likelihood is that anyone wanting to take the title will need to beat Sinner and Alcaraz in consecutive matches to win the US Open.

Have Fritz, Shelton, or Tiafoe proven they can do so? You’d have to say no.

Whether they can find the necessary form to challenge before the US Open starts remains to be seen.

The 2026 US Open begins on Sunday, August 30.
