Andy Murray sets up ‘big challenge’ against Daniil Medvedev at Miami Open

Andy Murray is relishing the challenge of facing Daniil Medvedev at the Miami Open, hoping the match will be a revealing test of his capabilities.

In his opening match at the Miami Open, three-time Grand Slam icon Murray dispatched Argentine Federico Delbonis in straight sets 7-6 (7-4), 6-1. In doing so, Murray has set up a second round tie against reigning US Open champion and World number two Medvedev.

Earlier this month, Murray revealed that he is a big admirer of the Russian number one and praised his “unorthodox” playing style.

Two-time Miami Open champion Murray also recently announced that he had reunited with former coach Ivan Lendl, who is an eight-time Slam legend in his own right.

In two separate spells from 2012 to 2014 and 2016 to 2018, Lendl previously guided the British ace to all three of his Grand Slam titles, both Olympic gold medals as well as the World number one position and Year-end number one title.

Murray will now be looking to improve his consistency as he enters the latter stages of his career.

Meanwhile, the Russian will have his own motivations as he vies to reclaim the World number one position from 20-time Grand Slam great Novak Djokovic. Medvedev lost the title at last week’s Indian Wells Masters when he lost to French veteran Gael Monfils.

When asked whether he felt he had a chance against the formidable World number two, in his post-match press conference after beating Federico Delbonis, Murray said “yeah, I mean, I hope so!

“But you know, obviously, [it will be] a tough match.

“He has played extremely well on the hard courts in the last few seasons. You know, he deserves to be right up there at the top of the game. So, yeah, a big challenge for me, a great test.

“You know, I’ve got a big training block after this tournament, and you know, it will be a really good test for where my game is at and the things I need to work on as well against him. So, looking forward to that.”
