Alex Eala defeated Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, 6-3, 6-3, to reach the second round of the Madrid Open.
The win was one of Eala’s best on clay, defeating a former French Open finalist in straight sets.
How would you rate Alex Eala’s first-round win /10?
She beat a former semi-finalist in straight sets!
Many believe clay is Eala’s weakest surface, an understandable assumption, given the Filipina has never reached a tour-level quarter-final on the red dirt.
However, Pavlyuchenkova seems to think Eala’s game is suited to the clay…
Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova claims Alex Eala’s consistent game is suited to clay courts
Speaking to ‘Bolshe‘ after the match, Pavlyuchenkova shared her thoughts on the Filipina.
“I don’t think she has any ‘Wow’ shots or serves, but she plays very consistently, without any mistakes,” said Pavlyuchenkova (translated from Russian).
Will Alex Eala’s serve stop her from winning a Grand Slam?
She only won 37% of her second serve points in her Madrid opener…
“Quite a Spanish style of tennis, which, in principle, is what is needed on clay.”
Pavlyuchenkova’s assessment of Eala’s game is surprising, but it makes a lot of sense.
Ignoring her results, you can understand why Eala’s game would be suited to the clay.
She doesn’t have a big weapon like some of the best players on tour, but has elite movement and variety of shots, which is made all the more dangerous by her consistency.
So rather than writing Eala off on clay, perhaps fans need to stay patient and wait to see her reach her full potential on the surface.
After all, Pavlyuchenkova is a former French Open finalist, and has won three WTA titles on clay.
If she believes Eala’s game is suited to the clay, it probably is!

Pavlyuchenkova continued, delivering her verdict on the match itself.
“It will be difficult to find anything positive today,” said Pavlyuchenkova.
“I tried to find positivity during the match, but it was hard.
“I started the match very well, and I could have broken her in the second game, but that was about it.
“Every time something [good] was about to happen, it failed.
