You cant deny that the Middle East does a nice line in tennis publicity stunts.

The footage of Andre Agassi and Roger Federer hitting tennis balls on top of Dubais Burj Al Arab hotel in 2005 was breathtaking.

This time its the turn of Sony Ericsson, the WTA Tour and Doha to wow us with some stunning and unusual tennis photography.

French Open champion Ana Ivanovic and Olympic gold medallist Elena Dementieva were transported to Palm Island in the middle of Doha Bay in the Arabian Gulf on Monday for the first ever game of desert island tennis.

Both girls are in Qatar to compete in the eight-player end-of-season Sony Ericsson Championships that begin at the Khalifa International Tennis Complex on Tuesday.

It was such a fun way to start the Sony Ericsson Championships, Ivanovic said afterwards. It was so unusual to be playing tennis on a deserted island with no one there but Elena, myself and the ballboys!

As ever, Tennishead will be on the ground in Doha bombarding you with unique photos and blogs from arguably the most prestigious womens event of the year.

The action kicks off in less than 24 hours join us then.
