The world number 21 blasted 18 aces while committing three double faults, but won 79% (53-of-67) of his first serve points and had his serve broken just once.

Almagro is the only seeded player left on his side of the draw and will face Daniel Gimeno-Traver in the last eight after the Spaniard defeated sixth seed Albert Montanes 7-6 (7/5) 7-6 (7/5).

Along with Montanes, fellow Spaniard Marcel Granollers, the seventh seed, and Carlos Moya, the eighth seed, all crashed out.

On the other side of the draw, second-seeded Frenchman Gael Monfils beat Brazil’s Thomaz Bellucci 7-6 (7/4) 6-7 (5/7) 6-1.

Monfils will now meet Leonardo Maye after the Argentinean beat former champion Moya 6-4 7-5.

Third seed Tommy Robredo cruised into the last eight with a 6-2 6-0 victory over American Kevin Kim as he continues his pursuit of a third title in as many weeks.

Robredo, who won 91% (21-of-23) of his first serve points, will take on fifth seed Jose Acasuso in the quarter-finals after the Argentinean beat compatriot Juan Ignacio Chela 7-5 6-3.

Argentina’s Martin Vassallo Arguello, who defeated Granollers 6-4 6-3, will square off against Daniel Koellerer after the Austrian qualifier followed up his upset of top seed David Nalbandian in the first round with a 6-4 5-7 7-6 (7/4) triumph over Alberto Martin.
