Alexandra Eala has advanced to the Hong Kong Open second round after Katie Boulter’s retirement from their first-round match.

Eala was leading 6-4, 2-1 when the Brit called the trainer onto court, before retiring from the match.

Boulter, who was visibly tearful, was the finalist in Hong Kong 12 months ago.

Eala’s task will not get any easier in the next round: she faces Canadian Open champion Victoria Mboko, who defeated Talia Gibson in her first-round match.

Following Boulter’s retirement, Eala wished her opponent well, hoping she could reflect on her season with pride.

Eala reacts to Katie Boulter’s retirement

“I am a little out of words,” Eala told Sky Sports while still on court.

“I think this time of the year is a tough moment for a lot of players physically and mentally, being the end of the season.

“I hope Katie can take this time to recover and look back at her season proudly.”

For Boulter, this was an unfortunate result. No one wishes to see another in such distress, and one can hope she is able to bounce back quickly.

Unfortunately for the Brit, she will now lose 133 WTA points. This is because she reached the final of the 2024 Hong Kong Open.

In 2024, Boulter defeated Aoi Ito and Xinyu Wang on her way to the final, before losing to Diana Shnaider.

Boulter is set to fall to world number 99

For Boulter, this was a damaging loss. As per the WTA live rankings, the Brit is set to fall 20 places in the rankings to world number 99.

Consequently, this fall could result in a significant issue at the start of 2026.

The players seeded within the top 104 WTA players six weeks before a Grand Slam event gain direct entry into the main draw.

Therefore, Boulter is now perilously close to dropping out of that guaranteed position.

The Brit has experienced a period of mixed form in Asia, defeating the likes of Linda Noskova while also being heavily defeated by Eva Lys.

However, Boulter possesses the ability to defeat some of the best players on the WTA Tour, as demonstrated by her triumph against Paula Badosa earlier this year.

As for Eala, she will take great confidence in her performance against Boulter. The Filipino star produced some marvellous forehand winners during the contest and will hope to carry this form into her clash against Mboko.
