Alexandra Eala has advanced to the Madrid Open second round after defeating Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in straight sets.
It was a largely straightforward affair for the young Filipina, who defeated the Russian 6-3, 6-3 in the Spanish capital.
Eala benefited from her opponent’s erratic play: Pavlyuchenkova struck a plethora of unforced errors throughout Wednesday’s contest.
Will Alex Eala’s serve stop her from winning a Grand Slam?
She only won 37% of her second serve points in her Madrid opener…
Following Wednesday’s victory, Eala has set up a match with 19th seed Elise Mertens.
The 20-year-old now has the opportunity to make a deep run in Madrid, particularly following the withdrawals of two seeded players.
Alexandra Eala’s major opportunity in Madrid
Now that Alex Eala has moved past Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, a glorious opportunity awaits her.
Prior to the tournament, both Ekaterina Alexandrova and Amanda Anisimova – seeded 12th and sixth – were present in Alex Eala’s section of the Madrid Open draw.

However, Alexandrova and Anisimova removed themselves from contention shortly before the event’s commencement.
This has now opened up the section of the draw for Eala.
Following the withdrawals of Alexandrova and Anisimova, Elise Mertens is now the highest seed left in Eala’s section of the Madrid draw.
Second-round matches in Alex Eala’s Madrid Open section
- Alex Eala vs Elise Mertens
- Karolina Pliskova vs Maria Sakkari
- Zeynep Sonmez vs Cristina Bucsa
- Magdalena Frech vs Solana Sierra
Should Eala defeat Mertens, she would play Karolina Pliskova or 33rd seed Maria Sakkari in the third round. Prior to the event, Eala had been projected to face Alexandrova in the third round.
Should Eala advance further, she will likely play Magdalena Frech or Cristina Bucsa, rather than Anisimova.

The best advice Alex Eala has received from Rafael Nadal
Eala recently attended the 2026 Laureus Sports Awards at the Cibeles Palace in Madrid, Spain.
Ahead of the ceremony, Eala spoke to some of the many reporters present at the event.
During her discussions with journalists, Eala was asked to pinpoint the best advice she has ever received from Rafael Nadal.

Eala, a graduate of the Rafa Nadal Academy, was more than happy to answer the question.
“Rafa always says to surround yourself with good people and he said that in the speech at my graduation and he says it many times,” the Filipina said, as captured by Eurosport Spain.
“And I think there could be no better advice.”
