Alexander Zverev came up short against Jannik Sinner at the Vienna Open, despite going one set up against the World No. 2.

Zverev was full of praise for Sinner before the match, but that didn’t stop him racing to a one set lead against the Italian.

Sinner was able to fight back and win the next set to continue his excellent indoor hard court record and lift the Vienna Open for a second time.

After the match, Zverev sent a direct message to Sinner after falling to the World No. 2 for the fourth time in his career.

Alexander Zverev makes bold claim about Jannik Sinner after Vienna loss

Zverev was as classy as you’d expect after losing his second final to Sinner, following their match at the Australian Open earlier this year.

“I’d like to congratulate Jannik, whose level has been off the charts these last two years. Currently for me you’re the best player in the world,” said Zverev.

“What an amazing year. 4 Grand Slam finals and 2 Grand Slam titles,” he added. “This week of course, simply the best player here in Vienna. To your team, Of course very well done.”

“The last couple years have been amazing. You continue improving. I know Jannik is the biggest part of it but you guys have such a big part in it as well.

“The improvement you guys made is amazing to see,” he continued. “Well done and good luck.”

Zverev has lost his last three matches to Sinner, with his last win over the Italian coming at the 2023 US Open.

Alexander Zverev’s 2025 final record

Zverev has reached four finals in 2025, but his record has been poor, with just one of those ending with the World No. 3 lifting the trophy.

The German won the Bavarian Championships in April 2025, defeating Ben Shelton at the clay court tournament for his sole win of the year.

Zverev’s losses have come at the Australian Open and the Vienna Open to Sinner, as well as at the Stuttgart Open.

The World No. 3 lost in straight sets at the grass court tournament on home turf ahead of Wimbledon.
