Alexander Zverev had been struggling with his back again ahead of Roland Garros this year.

Zverev lost to Luciano Darderi in his fourth round match in Rome, despite having four match points against the Italian.

The German was clearly struggling with a recurring back issue in this match, and Zverev subsequently withdrew from the Hamburg Open.

With rumours circulating around Zverev’s fitness ahead of Roland Garros this year, he has now provided an update on his back injury.

Alexander Zverev says he feels ‘ready’ for Roland Garros

During media day at Roland Garros this year, Zverev was asked about his back injury in his pre-tournament press conference.

Zverev responded by confirming that he was feeling physically much better, revealing that he had visited a German doctor, who had previously helped him with the same issue last year.

“Good,” answered the world number three. “I’ve had some time off after Rome, I could take care of my back a little bit, so that was very, very useful.

“I went to see some doctors in Germany, which was very, very useful and I feel good. I feel like I’m ready to go and yeah, hopefully I can show that on the court on Sunday.

“Yeah, I mean, the back issue started last year, and I was really struggling the entire year, and then I went to see a very, very famous German doctor in December and he did his treatments in December.

“He did two treatments in December, and I felt unbelievable for the first three months of the season. Let’s say until end of April, and then in Munich, it started acting up again, and then after summer I was really struggling.

“But the treatment he does, you need some days after that to feel well again, and I didn’t have that until after Rome and then after Rome I went to see him again, I went to see him twice, within a couple of days, two treatments again, and to be honest, it feels amazing after what he does.”

Alexander Zverev’s potential route to the Roland Garros title

Besides his relatively disappointing Italian Open result, Zverev has enjoyed a consistent 2026 season so far, reaching the final of the Madrid Open, as well as the semifinals of the Australian Open, Indian Wells, the Miami Open and the Monte Carlo Masters.

Zverev’s big issue has been Jannik Sinner, who he has lost his last nine matches against, including four defeats to the world number one this year.

Sinner will be a potential final opponent for Zverev, but he has many other players to overcome before then.

Some of the potential threats to Zverev in his half of the draw include Novak Djokovic, Taylor Fritz and Karen Khachanov.

Zverev will also play Frenchman Benjamin Bonzi, who beat Daniil Medvedev at Wimbledon and the US Open last year, in his first round match.

This will be a first-time meeting between the two players, with Zverev and Bonzi’s match taking place on Sunday, May 24.
