Alexander Zverev defeated Jiri Lehecka, 6-4, 7-5, 3-6, 7-6, to set up a Wimbledon quarter-final tie against Taylor Fritz.

The recently crowned French Open champion suffered a setback in his fourth-round match when play was suspended on Monday evening.

He then lost the third set when play resumed, but recovered to win in four sets, advancing to his maiden Wimbledon quarter-final.

Alexander Zverev warns tennis fans that his Wimbledon quarterfinal vs Taylor Fritz won’t be entertaining

Zverev was asked what fans should expect from his quarter-final match against Fritz.

“Probably not a very entertaining one!” he said.

“We both serve 140mph, so there are not going to be many rallies, I would not expect.

“But this is grass-court tennis, everything happens very fast and very quickly.

“I am going to do everything I can to play my best tennis tomorrow.”

Zverev and Fritz have met 15 times on tour, and it’s the American who leads their head-to-head 10-5.

Fritz has won seven consecutive matches against the world number three, enjoying a remarkable spell of dominance.

With that being the case, you’d expect Fritz to win their upcoming Wimbledon quarter-final, although former champion Marion Bartoli isn’t so sure.

During BBC Radio 5 Live’s post-match coverage, Bartoli explained how Zverev’s recent French Open win could be the difference maker when he plays Fritz.

“The matchup from [Alexander] Zverev against [Taylor] Fritz is really not in his favour,” she said.

“But I just feel, again, having that Grand Slam victory, could change the table around.

“But absolutely, Sascha Zverev is going to have to play more aggressively from the back of the court. Especially against Fritz, who is so comfortable on the grass, you really want to take the racket out of his hands.

“I think for now, he is going to be pleased to finally get the match [won] in four, probably didn’t want to get into a fifth and stay on the court even longer, because Fritz already finished his match yesterday. But very interesting to see if Zverev, with all his improvements, is finally going to be able to beat Fritz.”

Alexander Zverev is ‘incredibly happy’ after reaching his first Wimbledon quarter-final

Zverev will be keen to beat Fritz in the quarter-finals, but for now, he’ll celebrate a landmark win in his career.

“Who would have thought it would only take me 12 years to get there?” he said.

“I am incredibly happy, incredibly relieved to achieve that, but of course I want to play three more matches here.

“It was a fantastic match that lasted two days. It is never easy to come back the following day, and I thought he played amazingly today. Credit to him for keeping the fight up and making it very difficult for me.”

Zverev was then asked how difficult he found it to reset, playing the match over two days.

“For me, it was a bit difficult. I lost the first three games and gave away the third set. But he came out playing incredible tennis and swinging. Credit to him, he did a fantastic job with that. But again, I am happy to be through in four sets. I am happy to not play another set today,” he said.

“Mentally, it’s more difficult than physically. Not having time to breathe, to realise what is happening, and to prepare for the next match.

“Playing back-to-back days, especially best of five, is not easy, but I am very happy to be playing tomorrow. That is the most important thing, I hope I will be back on this wonderful court and playing my best tennis again.”

Zverev will return to take on Fritz in the quarter-finals on Wednesday, July 8.
