Alexander Bublik’s impressive Australian Open campaign has come to an end, thwarted by Alex de Minaur in the fourth round.
For many, this clash was billed as one of the most exciting potential match-ups of the entire tournament.
In the end, it turned out to be a monumental anti-climax, with the Aussie dominating from start to finish.
Despite Alexander Bublik’s continued efforts to trouble his opponent, his huge ball-striking was constantly nullified by the conditions inside Rod Laver Arena.
He has since spoken about the courts, stating what he felt was ‘a fact’ about them.
Alexander Bublik speaks about the Australian Open courts
Having been heard complaining to his box about the sluggishness of the courts, he was asked to expand on this in his press conference.
Bublik admitted: “No, the court was really slow. Like, it’s one of the slowest courts I think alongside Indian Wells that I played on, but it’s not an excuse. It’s just a fact.

“So, for me, I was not adjusting quickly. I should have adjusted more quickly. I mean, had a game plan in case that would be a slow court, because I haven’t hit on Rod Laver before. I only played 1 Point Slam there, which was a great preparation.
“But, by the way, I hit it all the time on Margaret or Cain, so for me, it was more similar to — I thought the conditions would be similar, which was probably my fault not to take it more deeply to check. Yeah, that’s the outcome.
“But, I mean, that’s life. I just try to get better next time.”
Keen not to place the blame, the Kazakh did note how these conditions favoured his opponent, adding: “I guess the scoreline is really saying how tough it is, because I think I served well. I mean, especially the second and third set, I served, like, over 70%, and I won, like, what, seven points or, whatever, ten points.

“Yeah, it was all one-sided, unfortunately. It’s not what I wanted. It’s not what I was preparing for, but that’s tennis. That’s how the results come. You know, I was winning all the matches. I lost one set up until today, and today I lost three in a row.
“So, I mean, it’s time to recover, time to reset the mind, and get a little vacation for a couple of days and go back on track.”
Martina Navratilova admitted she’d been surprised by Bublik this week, but he had no answer for the relentless efforts of Alex de Minaur today.
Alexander Bublik has still had a fantastic Australian Open
Although he will have been disappointed with the manner of his exit, Bublik can leave Melbourne feeling proud of his performances.
After all, his run to the fourth round marks a career-best for him, having only ever reached the second round previously.

He will enjoy a nice rankings boost because of this too, further solidifying his presence in and around the top ten.
2026 could be a huge season for Bublik to build upon the foundation he laid throughout last year. This Australian Open campaign marks a fine start to doing just that.
