Alex de Minaur now has the best chance of his career to break his unwanted Grand Slam record at Wimbledon

Alex de Minaur is part of an unenviable generation that has experienced both the full force of the Big Three and the best so far from Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz.

As such, big titles have been in short supply for the rest of the chasing pack.

The Australian has suffered more than most, but on occasion has let himself down when handed the opportunity to break through his glass ceiling.

This year’s French Open represented just that, having stated that he ‘wasted an opportunity’ after he suffered a surprise defeat in the third round.

Fortunately, he has bounced back well and has taken to the grass-court season with ease. In doing so, Alex de Minaur has therefore given himself a chance to break an unwanted personal record at Wimbledon this year.

Alex de Minaur’s unwanted Grand Slam record

Despite having always been seeded, he has never managed to get higher than sixth in the world.

This means that, by at least the quarter-finals, De Minaur will be tasked with defeating one of the world’s top four players, which he struggles with.

Will Alex de Minaur finish 2026 ranked inside the top five?

Losing in seven major quarter-finals, and having never made it past that round, perfectly encapsulates this unfortunate record.

However, there’s cause for optimism from within his camp, especially given how he has bounced back since that French Open disappointment, after which he claimed: “I can’t break out of this cycle.”

This year’s Wimbledon could represent the best opportunity of his career to finally do so.

Why Alex de Minaur could shine at Wimbledon this year

What makes it so plausible that success at the All England Club could be in the offing is how well De Minaur is currently playing at Queen’s, following reaching the final of the Libema Open just last week.

He has transferred from clay to grass with remarkable ease, and looks a genuine threat on this surface to everyone he faces.

And, given that there should be a weakened draw at this Grand Slam again, there’s more reason to believe in De Minaur’s chances.

Carlos Alcaraz has already withdrawn from Wimbledon, whilst Jannik Sinner heads to the All England Club shrouded in uncertainty after his shock early defeat at Roland Garros.

Even Novak Djokovic remains an unpredictable commodity, as another who suffered an early defeat, albeit at the hands of Joao Fonseca.

This could be the perfect opportunity for De Minaur to take advantage of an uncertain and ravaged field, just as Alexander Zverev did at Roland Garros.

He will likely not be expecting to win the entire event, but at least breaking his personal record by bypassing the quarter-finals would be enough to mark progress.
