Alejandro Davidovich Fokina shares ‘bond’ with Novak Djokovic after Monte Carlo run
Monte Carlo sensation Alejandro Davidovich Fokina has openly discussed his off-court relationship with Novak Djokovic after downing the Serb last week in the the second round of the clay Masters event.
The young Spaniard is coming off a career-defining week as he reached his first ever Masters 1000 final as well as rising to a career-high ranking of 27 in the world.
However, earlier in the week, 22-year-old Davidovich Fokina was already making headlines as he defeated world number one Novak Djokovic for the first time.
He then backed up his three set victory over the Serb with battling wins over former world number seven David Goffin, Indian Wells Masters champion Taylor Fritz and former world number three Grigor Dimitrov, before losing to defending champion Stefanos Tsitsipas in the final.
Following his epic run to the final and landmark victory over the 20-time Slam winner, the man from Malaga has shared he already had a “bond” with the Serbian before their Monaco clash, as he trained with the two-time Monte Carlo champion at his home.
He said: “Whenever I have trained with him, he has made it very easy for me.
“We train at his house, he is a top guy, very nice, very familiar and kind.
“We spend a lot of time together.
“I created a good bond [with him], we get along very well.”
Reflecting on his win, Davidovich Fokina was very complimentary about Djokovic saying: “This win is so special for me, I grew up watching Nole and I’m a big fan.
“I look at him at every tournament, every match.
“Here in Monte Carlo, a full crowd of people, against the number one, I enjoyed every moment, I’m so happy.
“I started from the beginning very well because I knew Nole doesn’t have the confidence because he hadn’t played a lot [before this].
“Then I had to focus on every point because I had my chances from the beginning and I did it.”
