The Vienna Open is always an eye-catching event, but the 2024 edition cannot be missed as it will be the final tournament of Dominic Thiem’s career.

When is the 2024 Vienna Open?

Main draw action at the Vienna Open will get underway on Monday 21st October at 2pm local time (1pm BST), and the tournament will conclude on Sunday 27th October with the singles final also beginning at 2pm (1pm GMT).

Players will find out their individual paths tomorrow (Saturday 19th October) when the draw takes place at 12pm in Vienna (11am BST).

Ahead of the main draw, qualifying action will be conducted over the coming weekend as players battle for the four remaining entry spots.

Where is the Vienna Open held?

The Vienna Open is played on indoor hard courts at the Wiener Stadthalle, and has done since its inaugural edition in 1974.

Centre Court at the arena can hold upto 9,600 spectators, and is supported by the secondary Glaubandich Court.

Who is playing at the 2024 Vienna Open?

Despite the withdrawals of Daniil Medvedev and Taylor Fritz, the tournament in Vienna once again has a strong lineup with seven top 20 ranked players.

Seeded players in the Austrian capital are 2021 champion Alexander Zverev, Alex de Minaur, Grigor Dimitrov, Tommy Paul, former finalist Frances Tiafoe, Lorenzo Musetti, Jack Draper and Alexei Popyrin.

Some of the other striking names in the entry list include Tomas Machac, Karen Khachanov, Gael Monfils and Matteo Berrettini, to name a few.

However, the focus of the tournament this year will be on former World No.3 and 2020 US Open champion Dominic Thiem, who say farewell to professional tennis at his home tournament.

The 31-year-old is the second former champion playing in Vienna this year, with Thiem claiming one of his 17 career titles at the ATP 500 tournament back in 2019.

However, the past three years for Thiem have been largely disrupted, as he has been hampered by a right wrist injury and has now decided to hang up his rackets.

As Thiem is now ranked at World No.289, he has required a wildcard to gain entry into the Vienna Open this year alongside teenage compatriot Joel Schwaerzler and 2018 runner-up Kei Nishikori.

Prize money is also a big incentive for players competing in the Austrian capital, with a total pot of €2,470,310 on offer next week.

Last year, Jannik Sinner beat Daniil Medvedev in a very tightly contested final, with the Italian using his success in Vienna to become World No.1.

While in the doubles draw it was Rajeev Ram and Joe Salisbury claiming the title for a second time as a pairing, after beating Nathaniel Lammons and Jackson Withrow in another very close three set battle.
