The 38-year-old, who won 16 grand slam doubles titles, takes on a newly-expanded, full-time position that combines a role as the national men’s coach overseeing the entire male player development pathway with the Davis Cup coaching job.

“I am excited by the challenge ahead. This job appealed to me because of the breadth of the scope and the chance to make a difference,” said Woodbridge, who was a member of Australia’s 1999 and 2003 Davis Cup-winning teams.

“It goes way beyond the Davis Cup and allows me to work with top players and coaches at various levels of their development.”

“We have some terrific talent in both the playing and coaching ranks and a recently improved structure that I believe can help us drive some big improvements in Australian tennis performance.”

Tennis Australia director of tennis Craig Tiley said the new role was pivotal to the development of tennis in Australia.

“Todd brings a terrific skill set to the role. He has a wealth of recent playing experience at the elite level, has been a national coach, tournament director and is a terrific communicator on and off the court,” Tiley said.

“Even in his role in the media he has been analysing the very best in the game from close quarters. We are delighted to have him in this role.”

Australia have won the Davis Cup on 28 occasions but last year dropped out of the World Group in a play-off to Chile.
