The world No.1 suffered a shock defeat to Alize Cornet in Dubai last month after withdrawing from the Qatar Total Open with a back injury.

After missing the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells last week (Williams has not played the event since 2001), the American is back in action in Miami.

''I've been waiting on this and it feels good to be back here,'' said Williams, who moved with her family to Florida when she was nine. ''It is home. It feels home.''

Williams, who will kick off the defence of her title against Yaroslava Shvedova, is playing only her fourth tournament of the year.

''The back is good,'' Williams said. ''It's much better. It's really good, actually. I've been doing tons of treatment to make sure it stays loose, so I don't have any problems.''
