The British No.1, who saved three match points during her first-round victory over No.32 seed Caroline Garcia, found herself down by an early break but recovered to secure a 6-4 6-2 victory on Court One.

Standing between Watson and a place in the fourth round is world No.1 and 20-time Grand Slam champion Serena Williams, who sailed to a 6-4 6-1 victory over Timea Babos on Centre Court. The five-time Wimbledon champion is bidding to complete the ‘Serena Slam’ by regaining the title she last won in 2012 to hold all four majors for a second time in her career.

“She’s always the favourite for every tournament she plays,” said Watson of her third-round opponent. “Serena’s a great player. She’s an amazing athlete, a great champion. She’s always the one to watch. I think she’s the one to beat in tournaments like this. She’s probably the toughest opponent.”
