Vassallo Arguello, currently in his best ever world ranking position of 50th, was called up for the first time by captain Modesto Vazquez after Nalbandian withdrew due to a virus.

Vazquez said: “Vassallo is happy to be joining us. He’s enjoying his best ever form. He’s 29 years old, his career has not been easy, but now he is 50th in the rankings and part of our Davis Cup team.”

Born in Temperley in the Southern suburbs of Buenos Aires, Vassallo Arguello joins Juan Monaco, Juan Ignacio Chela and Lucas Arnold for this weekend’s tie on the clay of the Estadio Parque Roca in Buenos Aires.

Guillermo Canas and Agustin Calleri made themselves unavailable for personal reasons while Juan Martin Del Potro did not want to interrupt his hard-court season by playing on clay.

Vazquez denied there were any problems between the Argentinian players, particularly Nalbandian and Del Potro, who have reportedly had disagreements since Argentina lost the 2008 final to Spain in Mar del Plata.

“There is no lack of communication,” he said. “I want to focus on beating Holland. I want (journalists) and fans to focus on Vassallo, Monaco, Arnold and Chela and give them the support they deserve.”
