France’s Simon, the world number seven, defeated Philipp Petzschner 6-3 6-4 but Berdych, who reached the fourth round at Wimbledon, was dumped out 6-3 6-3 by talented German Nicolas Kiefer.

There was more success for the hosts with fifth seed Philipp Kohlschreiber beating Diego Junqueira 6-3 6-2, Rainer Schuettler knocking out Ivo Minar 2-6 7-6 (7/2) 6-4 and Mischa Zverev claiming a 6-2 6-4 win over Guillermo Garcia-Lopez.

In an all-German clash between Simon Greul and Andreas Beck it was the former who came out on top, triumphing 7-6 (7/4) 7-6 (7/5).

Two other seeds were sent packing with veteran Fabrice Santoro, the seventh seed, losing 5-7 7-6 (7/3) 6-1 to Fabio Fognini and Jeremy Chardy beating eighth seed Jose Acasuso 6-2 7-6 (7/4).

Lucky loser Alexandre Sidorenko and Spain’s Oscar Hernandez also made it through.
