Schiavone too good for Peer

Israeli Peer made a flying start and served for a one-set lead at 5-3, but Schiavone won four games in a row to turn the tables and then eased through the second set for a 7-5 6-3 victory.

Second seed Sybille Bammer and Carla Suarez Navarro, seeded fourth, also had to come through tight battles to seal their progress.

Austrian Bammer was swept aside by Tsvetana Pironkova in the first set before fighting back to triumph 2-6 7-6 (7/2) 7-5 while Suarez Navarro of Spain defeated Warsaw Open champion Alexandra Dulgheru 4-6 6-3 6-3.

Barbora Zahlavova Strycova was the fourth player to reach the second round today, beating Kristina Kucova 7-5 6-4, while Timea Bacsinszky, Petra Martic, Ksenia Pervak and Kristina Mladenovic all came through qualifying.
