‘Novak Djokovic will play US Open and will travel next week’ – World number one set for Flushing Meadows


Novak Djokovic has finally decided to play the US Open after a long ‘process’ of debate, reports the New York Times.

The world number one has been highly reluctant to commit, and previously claimed the proposed safety restrictions made it ‘impossible’ for him to travel.

Those restrictions have been relaxed now, with permission for players to rent private homes to house them and their team rather than forcing them to remain in ‘bubble’ hotels with a very limited entourage.

That change, according to the New York Times, has finally seen Novak Djokovic decide to travel.

It has been quite a process and quite a behind-the-scenes and in-front-of-the-scenes debate,” said New York Times and veteran tennis journalist Christopher Clarey.

“But world No. 1 Novak Djokovic plans to travel to the USA this week and will play the Western & Southern Open and the US Open.”

The only remaining hurdle may be the issue over potential requirements to quarantine upon his arrival back in Europe.

Djokovic was reported to be ready to lead a top-20 boycott of the US Open if exemptions were not made, claiming quite rightly that a 14-day quarantine would massively damage players’ chances of preparing for the French Open.
