Novak Djokovic makes winning return with 45th victory of 2021

Novak Djokovic is into the third round of the Paris Masters after coming through his first match since the US Open final.

The world number one is looking to claim a sixth career title in the French capital at the final Masters 1000 event of the year.

Moreover, Djokovic is looking to clinch an outright record seventh year-end finish at world number one. He would guarantee that status should he claim the title in Paris.

The Serb faced Marton Fucsovics in the second round after the Hungarian overcame Fabio Fognini in his first round match.

A 6-2 opening set for Djokovic made it look as though he would breeze through the match. But Fucsovics put up a fight to seal a break in the second and level the tie with a 6-4 set.

But Djokovic got the job done as he saw out the match 6-3 in the third after just over two hours on centre court.

The 34-year-old now holds a 45-6 win-loss record across the season, a win percentage of 88%.

Next up, Djokovic will face a Frenchman in either Gael Monfils or Adrian Mannarino.

No matter who Djokovic faces between the two, he will be the overwhelming favourite. Across 21 meetings against both men, Djokovic has never lost, holding a 17-0 record against Monfils and 4-0 over Mannarino.
