Nadal, Jankovic top Aussie Open seedings

Aussie Open chiefs confirmed the seedings for the Melbourne slam on Thursday, 24 hours before the draw for the first major of 2009 takes place.

Rafael Nadal and Jelena Jankovic have been named as No.1 seeds for the men’s and women’s singles and both are going for their first Australian Open titles Jankovic is yet to win a grand slam despite occupying pole position on the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour world rankings.

All but one of the top 32 men in the world are seeded, the exception being Russian Nikolay Davydenko who will be absent with a heel injury.

Thirty of the top 32 women are seeded missing from the Melbourne slam are Maria Sharapova with a shoulder injury and China’s Li Na, who has been sidelined with a knee injury.
