Lorenzo Musetti set to wow Milan as he lands Next Gen ATP Finals spot

Rising talent Lorenzo Musetti has booked his spot as the sixth player to qualify for the fourth Next Gen ATP Finals in November.

While Jannik Sinner fights for the chance to qualify for the ATP Finals proper, fellow Italian youngster Musetti has now earned a spot at the under-21 equivalent.

The 19-year-old has had a breakthrough season that has seen him climb from 128th in the world to a career-high 57th in September. Currently ranked 67th in the world, he is the sixth most successful player under 21 on the ATP tour this year.

The Next Generation ATP Finals were established in 2017 as an event for the eight most promising players 21 and under from the season. Qualification is in line with how competitors for the ATP Finals are determined, by ranking points across the year.

Sinner leads the race this year, but may not compete as he is in with a chance of reaching the ATP Finals. Meanwhile Felix Auger-Aliassime, Carlos Alcaraz, Sebastian Korda and Jenson Brooksby are the other men who have qualified ahead of Musetti.

America’s Brandon Nakashima and Juan Manuel Cerundolo of Argentina occupy the seventh and eighth qualification spots presently.

At the last event in 2019, Sinner won the tournament ranked 93rd in the world as a wildcard. Musetti now has the chance to emulate his compatriot in Milan.

His best career tournament results to date have come at Acapulco and Lyon this year, reaching the semi-finals of both.

Musetti also came within a set of ending Novak Djokovic’s 2021 Roland Garros campaign, losing to the eventual champion 7-6 (9-7), 7-6 (7-2), 1-6, 0-6, 0-4 (ret.).
