There were few upsets on day three of the Pilot Penn New Haven event on Tuesday including a win for second seed Ivo Karlovic over John Isner.

The 6ft 10 Croatian managed to see off 6ft 9 American Isner 6-7, 6-3, 6-4 to make it into round three at the $708,000 hard court event in Connecticut.

Dr Ivo goes through to play Slovak qualifier Luka Gregorc, who put out 14th seeded Argentine Jose Acasuso 6-4, 6-4.

Another Argentine seed, Juan Monaco, also crashed out, the fifth seed losing to German Mischa Zverev 6-3, 6-3.

But it was plain sailing for a bunch of other big names as fourth seed Igor Andreev from Russia, sixth seeded Croat Marin Cilic, seventh seeded Italian Andreas Seppi, eighth seed Mardy Fish from America and ninth seeded Frenchman Marc Gicquel all recorded victories.

Two of the big names on site for the WTA event held at the same venue this week also made it through second round matches.

Third seed Marion Bartoli and fourth seed Agnes Szavay had to work hard but came away with three-set wins.

Former Wimbledon runner-up Bartoli, from France, edged past Bulgarian Tsvetana Pironkova 2-6, 6-4, 7-5, while Hungarys Szavay battled past Italian lucky loser Sara Errani 6-4, 6-7, 6-4.

Tuesday also saw first round wins for Italian Flavia Pennetta, former French world No.1 Amelie Mauresmo and Romanian qualifier Monica Niculescu.

Third seed Iveta Benesova was the only seed in action on day one of the WTA tier 4 Forest Hills Tennis Classic in New York on Tuesday.

The Czech player beat Russian Elena Vesnina (RUS) 6-1, 6-7, 7-5 and was joined in the second round by Russian pair Ekaterina Makarova and Vera Dushevina, and German Martina M
