Serbian Jankovic, the world number four and second seed, broke her opponent’s serve on five occasions on her way to a solid 6-2 6-1 win.

Home favourites Anabel Medina Garrigues and Carla Suarez Navarro, seeded four and five, are also into the next round after wins over Anastasiya Yakimova and Maret Ani respectively.

Sara Errani, the sixth seed from Italy, defeated Germany’s Julia Schruff 7-5 7-6 (7/6) – and unseeded Spaniard Virginia Ruano Pascual beat Tathiana Garbin in three sets.

There were also wins on Tuesday for Andreja Klepac, Renata Voracova, Arantxa Rus, Ekaterina Ivanova and Polona Hercog.
