Coco Gauff French Open upset 2020

“I think a lot of it is nerves” Grand Slam legend worried about Coco Gauff progress

Chris Evert thinks that American teen sensation Coco Gauff may have lost some of her fearlessness that last year saw her record some notable scalps

Evert herself was something of a child phenom and went on to achieve one of the greatest ever careers in men’s or women’s tennis , so she’s well placed to comment on this stage of Gauff’s own rise through the rankings.

Speaking in the Eurosport Cube last night, 18-time Grand Slam champion Chris Evert believes teenage sensation Coco Gauff – who lost in the second round against Italian Martina Trevisan – is suffering from nerves at the moment.

“It’s been interesting since COVID and the re-start of tennis, she hasn’t had the fearlessness of last year when she beat all the top players such as Venus Williams. She played with the kind of abandonment, played very freely. Everybody else was very nervous against her and now she has the target on her back.

“The freshman year is always easier, after that the players know her game, she had a few problems with her second serve in this tournament. I think a lot of it his nerves and just being young.”
