Brianti, the Italian number seven currently ranked just outside the world’s top 100, stood two games from victory over her struggling opponent 6-3 4-0 when Pavlyuchenkova defaulted.

In the day’s other first-round match, seventh seed Aravane Rezai of France had no such problems as she saw off another Russian, Galina Voskoboeva, in straight sets 6-2 6-4.
