‘Having Carlos Alcaraz in Spanish tennis is a joy,’ says ATP tour veteran
ATP tour veteran Feliciano Lopez has stated that right now “Spanish tennis is incredible”, labelling teen sensation Carlos Alcaraz in particular as a “joy”.
Alcaraz has been in red hot form this season as the teenage sensation claimed his first ever ATP 500 title at the Rio Open in February and then followed up the victory by winning the Miami Masters a month later, where the young Spaniard became the youngest ever Miami Open champion and third youngest Masters-level winner in history.
Last week, the man from Murcia tasted even more success as he claimed his fourth career title at the Barcelona Open and, as a result, achieved a new career-high of ninth in the world becoming the ninth youngest player ever to be ranked within the ATP top ten.
Carlos Alcaraz is next set to compete at the Madrid Masters next week, with the hope of winning his second successive Masters title.
Commenting on Alcaraz and the Madrid Open, the tournament director and former Wimbledon quarter-finalist Feliciano Lopez discussed this year’s tournament and that Spanish tennis is in a great place.
The 40-year-old told Radio Marca in an exclusive interview: “At the player level, what we want is for them to feel comfortable and loved so that they want to come back for more years. For people, this is a social event. The idea is that everyone feels part of the tournament, and I think that it has got that.
“We have Paula Badosa and Nadal among many others. In addition, this is one of the most special editions in recent years for various reasons, although it is the first one with the absence of Manolo Santana.
“Organizing all this takes a long time. We are already thinking about things for next year. I think that Spanish tennis is in an incredible moment and we are very excited that Rafa [Nadal] is here with us. I have hopes in that we can see him 100% on Wednesday. It’s a joy to have someone like Carlos Alcaraz in Spanish tennis”.
