The Ecuadorian claimed the first set on a tie-breaker before Hanescu stormed back to claim a 6-7 (6/8) 6-3 7-5 victory.

Seventh seed Mikhail Youzhny had life slightly easier with a 6-2 7-6 (9/7) win over Spain’s Daniel Gimeno-Traver, while local wild card Daniel Koellerer beat Thomaz Bellucci of Brazil 6-4 6-4.

There were also wins for Nicolas Massu, Andreas Beck and Marcel Granollers, while Agustin Calleri advanced when Lu Yen-hsun retired with their match finely poised at one set apiece.
