The Spaniard, ranked 74th in the world, dropped the first set but hit back to win 3-6 7-6 (7/1) 6-3.

Garcia-Lopez looked more comfortable on the clay as Benneteau, who came into the tournament’s main draw as a lucky loser, struggled for consistency.

The Frenchman won four successive games to take the opening set but was outplayed in the second-set tie-break.

Garcia-Lopez was the better player in the deciding set and two breaks of the Benneteau serve confirmed the victory.
