Ferrero, who won the French Open in 2003 and reached the US Open final later the same year, beat France’s Florent Serra in straight sets in a match featuring an amazing 10 breaks of serve.

There were five breaks in the opening set before Ferrero surprisingly served out to love to take it 6-4 after 48 minutes.

Fifth seed Serra, who had won both previous meetings between the pair, moved into a 3-1 lead in the second set but it was no surprise when he was immediately broken once again.

And the unseeded Ferrero, 29, eventually held his nerve to seal a 6-4 7-5 victory in 98 minutes.
