Dominic Thiem could face four Grand Slam winners in nightmare Roland Garros draw

US Open Champion Dominic Thiem may have to overcome four Grand Slam champions if he is to win his first Roland Garros title this year.

World No 3 Dominic Thiem battled past Alexander Zverev in five sets to win his first Major title at the US Open earlier this month, though could face an even tougher task at Roland Garros if he is to win another Grand Slam following a luckless draw.

Thiem, who has lost to 12-time champion Rafael Nadal in the final of the last two French Open’s, is heavily fancied to impress again in this year’s edition, though kicks off his campaign with a tricky fixture against 2014 US Open Champion Marin Cilic before a potential clash with American Reilly Opelka in the second.

Awaiting the Austrian in the third round could be Casper Ruud, who has been in fine form in the lead-up to the French Open with his only defeat coming against Novak Djokovic in the semi-finals of the Masters 1000 in Rome.

In the fourth round, Thiem may face three-time Major winner and French Open 2015 champion Stan Wawrinka or three-time Grand Slam champion Andy Murray before a possible meeting with Diego Schwartzman in the quarter final, with the Argentine showing good form coming into Roland Garros after beating Nadal in Rome.

If Thiem was to reach the semi-final, he could meet his French Open foe Rafael Nadal, who has prevented him from winning the event on two occasions, before a likely matchup with Novak Djokovic, with the Serb unlikely to face a single Grand Slam winner prior to the final.

Thiem’s (possible) route to a first Roland Garros title:

Round 1: Marin Cilic
Round 2: Reilly Opelka
Round 3: Casper Ruud
Round 4: Stan Wawrinka
QF: Diego Schwartzman
SF: Rafael Nadal
Final: Novak Djokovic
