The 12-time Grand Slam champion has been struggling with an elbow complaint for the last 18 months and he has taken the decision to end his campaign early. The world No.4 will not be involved at the US Open, but he hopes to return at the start of the 2018 season.

Djokovic, who retired in his quarter-final match with Tomas Berdych at the All England Club, said in a video on his Facebook page: “I have made the decision to not play any competitions or tournaments for the rest of 2017. Unfortunately this is a decision that had to be made at this moment. Wimbledon was probably the toughest tournament for me in terms of feeling pain that has escalated.

“I have consulted many of the doctors and specialists in the last 12-15 months – especially in the last couple of months when I felt the injury getting worse. They all agreed that I needed rest and that I need time. This is one of those injuries where nothing can really help instantly, so you just have to allow natural rehabilitation to take its course.

The former world No.1 admitted that it’s a difficult time for him but he is determined to remain upbeat. “Professionally this is not an easy decision for me, but I’m trying to look at it positively,” said the Serbian.

“I believe everything in life happens for a reason so I will try to use this time as best I can. It will be a couple of months at least before I hold a racket, and then after that, I hope to train. I’m looking forward to building my body, my game and my team.”

Djokovic also stated that his current coaching team will remain in place. “I’m happy to share that Andre Agassi has committed to stay with me next year,” he added. “I’m looking forward to getting back on the practice court with him and having him in the box for big tournaments.”
