Chile were without their top-ranked player, Fernando Gonzalez, due to a back injury and the South Americans endured a difficult day in his absence.

Ancic got the ball rolling with a 6-3 6-3 7-6 (7/4) victory over Nicolas Massau – the 24-year-old firing down 15 aces in a powerful display. Cilic then took just 93 minutes to put the 2005 winners 2-0 ahead as he eased past Paul Capdeville 6-1 6-2 6-1.

The same four players are due to meet in Saturday’s doubles when Chile will look to keep the tie alive.
